The large intestine is responsible for processing indigestible food material chyme after most nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine. The superior part gives rise to the ascending colon while the inferior branch meets a dead end.

The large intestine is a 1 to 15 meter continuation of the ileum extending from the ileocecal junction to the anus.
