Oris Anatomy

Orbicularis oris muscle also known as musculus orbicularis oris is a complex multi layered muscle which attaches through a thin superficial musculoaponeurotic system to the dermis of the upper lip and lower lip and serves as an attachment site for many other facial muscles around the oral region. In common language the orbicularis oris is often referred to as the kissing muscle it allows for facial expression and more specifically it is responsible for puckering the lips.

The orbicularis oris muscle is the muscle that surrounds the mouth and makes up the bulk of the lips.

Some of its fibers originate near the midline from the maxilla superiorly and the mandible inferiorly whereas other fibers are derived from both the buccinator in the cheek and the numerous other muscles acting on the lips. This muscle closes the mouth and puckers the lips when it contracts. It is also one of the muscles used in the playing of all brass instruments and some woodwind instruments. Until recently it was misinterpreted as a sphincter or circular muscle but it is actually composed of four independent quadrants that interlace and give only an appearance of circularity.

Each tooth has several distinct parts. In human anatomy the orbicularis oris muscle is a complex of muscles in the lips that encircles the mouth. The depressor anguli oris muscle attaches to the outer edges of the orbicularis oris muscle.
