Eyeballs anatomy. Six extraocular muscles in the orbit are attached to the eye. If the image is projected too far in front of the retina it causes the visual defect called myopia or nearsightedness. The cornea is the transparent dome shaped part of the eyeball.

The cornea and lens focus an image onto the retina at the back of the eye. The eye is surrounded by the orbital bones and is cushioned by pads of fat within the orbital socket. Picture of eye anatomy detail.

This is a strong layer of tissue that covers nearly the entire surface of the eyeball. It is the white and opaque part of the eyeball. These muscles move the eye up and down and side to side and rotate the eye.

Clear front window of the eye that transmits and focuses light into the eye. If the image is theoretically focused behind the retina the result is hyperopia or farsightedness. Nerve signals that contain visual information are transmitted through the optic nerve to the brain.

The sclera is outermost layer of the eyeball. Muscles responsible for moving the eyeball are attached to the eyeball at the sclera. Extraocular muscles help move the eye in different directions.

The eye has a number of components which include but are not limited to the cornea iris pupil lens retina macula optic nerve choroid and vitreous. At the front of the eyeball the sclera becomes the cornea.
