Internal Iliac Artery Anatomy

Each internal iliac artery courses downward into the pelvic cavity and is the main blood supply to the pelvic organs gluteal muscles and perineum. It originates at the bifurcation of the common iliac artery into its internal and external branches as shown in figure 1.

The internal iliac artery runs downward along the lateral wall of the pelvis crosses the linea terminalis and descends to the lesser pelvis through the upper part of the greater sciatic foramen dividing into an anterior and a posterior trunk.

This approximately occurs at vertebral level l5 s1. In the fetus the internal iliac artery is twice as large as the external iliac and is the direct continuation of the common iliac. The internal iliac artery begins at the common iliac bifurcation which is anterior to the sacroiliac joint at the level of the intervertebral disc between the l5 and s1 vertebrae.

The internal iliac artery latin. The internal iliac artery also known as the hypogastric artery is the smaller terminal branch of the common iliac artery. Internal iliac artery is divided into anterior and posterior trunk.

Arteria iliaca interna is the main artery of the pelvis that arises from the bifurcation of the common iliac artery. The artery is 4 cm long and traverses inferoposteriorly to the superior margin of the greater sciatic foramen. The anterior trunk supplies the pelvis visceral organs and the posterior trunk supplies pelvic parietal structures.

The obturator nerve is positioned below it while the external iliac vein is medial to it closer than the internal branch to the midline of the body. The external iliac artery supplies the lower limb and the internal iliac artery is the major vascular supply of the pelvis.
