Facial Nerve Anatomy

Several structures of the facial nervedescribed as nuclei segments and branchesproduce the four components of facial nerve function. It emerges from the pons of the brainstem controls the muscles of facial expression and functions in the conveyance of taste sensations from the anterior two thirds of the tongue.

Facial nerve anatomy. The facial nerve also carries fibres subserving the function of taste on the front of the tongue so weak solutions of sugar salt. All these muscles are derivatives of the second pharyngeal arch. It is one of the longest cranial nerves extending from the brainstem to the terminal end branches which are located throughout the face.

The functions of the facial nerve are examined by the patients ability to close the eyes tightly to bare the teeth and to attempt to whistle. The facial nerve is also known as the seventh cranial nerve cn7. The facial nerve has a complex anatomy.

The surgical anatomy and landmarks of the facial nerve. The nerve passes through the pyramidal eminence to supply the stapedius muscle in the middle ear. The nerves typically travels from the pons through the facial canal in the temporal bone and exits the skull at the stylomastoid foramen.

Branches of the facial nerve are responsible for innervating many of the muscles of the head and neck. The facial nerve is composed of approximately 10000 neurons 7000 of which are myelinated and innervate the nerves of facial expression. It conveys some sensory information from the tongue and the interior of the mouth.

It arises from the brainstem from an area posterior to the cranial nerve vi and anterior to cranial nerve viii. The facial nerve is the seventh cranial nerve or simply cn vii. The first motor branch arises within the facial canal.
