The muscles of the head include the tongue muscles of facial expression extra ocular muscles and muscles of mastication. This muscle originates at the side of the nose and has several insertion points on either side of the nose extending down to the lip and inserting at both lateral and frontal portions of the upper lip.

The tongue comprises of intrinsic and extrinsic muscles. The depressor labii inferioris is an analogous muscle that lowers the bottom lip. The muscles of the middle ear contract to dampen the amplitude of vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear.

The neck muscles including the sternocleidomastoid and the trapezius are responsible for the gross motor movement in the muscular system of the head and neck. The head rests on the top part of the vertebral column with the skull joining at c1 the first cervical vertebra known as the atlas. It receives motor innervation from the hypoglossal nerve.
