The right and left hip bones plus the sacrum and the coccyx together form the pelvis. The hip bone attaches the lower limb to the axial skeleton through its articulation with the sacrum. The pubic arch or space under the base of the pelvis is also wider for this reason.

The focus in this study session will be on the female pelvis which supports the major load of the pregnant uterus and the fetal skull which has to pass through the womans pelvis when she gives birth. The pelvic girdle is formed by a single hip bone.
