Lung Lobe Anatomy

The lobes are divided from each other by two fissures. Superior middle and inferior.

Bilaterally the upper lobes have apical posterior and anterior segments and the lower lobes superior apical and 4 basal segments anterior medial posterior and lateral.

Lung lobe anatomy. The lung tissue of this lobe is responsible for most of the gas exchange in the right lung during calm shallow breathing. The upper lobes contains 3 segments the middle lobe lingula 2 and the lower lobes 5. In general each lung has 10 segments.

Both lungs have oblique fissure and the right is further divided by a transverse fissure. Oblique fissure runs from the inferior border of the lung in a superoposterior direction until it meets the posterior lung border. Each lung is divided into lobes by fissures.

In the right lung there is an oblique fissure and a horizontal fissure separating the lung into three lobes upper middle and lower. The left lung is divided into two lobes upper and lower. The upper horizontal fissure separates the upper from the middle lobe.

The right lung has three lobes. It is divided into three lobes an upper middle and a lower lobe by two fissures one oblique and one horizontal. The diaphragm is the flat dome shaped muscle located at the base of the lungs and thoracic cavity.

The lobes are further separated into smaller segments with the right lung having 10 segments and the left lung having 9 2. This is in contrast to the much smaller lobule which is a clear division only visible under the microscope. The right and left lungs do not have an identical lobular structure.

The lungs are pyramid shaped paired organs that are connected to the trachea by the right and left bronchi. On the inferior surface the lungs are bordered by the diaphragm. In anatomy a lobe is a clear anatomical division or extension of an organ as seen for example in the brain lung liver or kidney that can be determined without the use of a microscope at the gross anatomy level.

The oblique fissure in the left lung separates the superior and the inferior lobe. The oblique and horizontal fissure divides the lungs into superior middle and inferior lobes. Each lobe again has its own visceral pleural covering.

The right upper lobe of the lung is one of the three lobes that make up the right lung. These lobes have their own pleural covering and these lie together to form the oblique major fissure. The right lung has both more lobes and segments than the left.

Gross anatomy of the lungs. The right upper lobe of the lung is located in the right superior corner of the thoracic cavity lateral to the trachea and esophagus.
