Guyon Canal Anatomy

It is approximately 4 cm in length. Ulnar artery thrombosis or aneurysm.

Guyon S Canal Release

As it crosses the wrist the ulnar nerve and ulnar artery run through the tunnel known as guyons canal.

Guyon canal anatomy. The canal begins at the proximal border of the pisiform bone and ends distally at the hook of the hamate. This problem is similar to carpal tunnel syndrome but involves a completely different nerve. The ulnar nerve begins at the side of the neck travels behind the elbow and ends in the hand at the little and ring fingers.

This canal is an anatomical fibro osseous structure. Guyons canal is a fibro osseous tunnel extending from the transverse carpal ligament at the proximal aspect of the pisiform to the origin of the hypothenar muscles at the hook of hamate. It can also be referred to as the ulnar canal or ulnar tunnel.

Guyons canal syndrome is an entrapment of the ulnar nerve as it passes through a tunnel in the wrist called guyons canal. After leaving the side of the neck the ulnar nerve travels through the armpit and down the arm to the hand and fingers. The ulnar canal or ulnar tunnel also known as guyons canal or tunnel is a semi rigid longitudinal canal in the wrist that allows passage of the ulnar artery and ulnar nerve into the hand.

This web clinic reviews the gross mri and variant anatomy of guyons canal followed by several pathologic examples and a brief treatment discussion. This tunnel is formed by two bones the pisiform and hamate and the ligament that connects them. Hook of hamate fracture or nonunion.

The nerve divides into a superficial sensory branch and a deeper motor branch in this area. Guyons canal is an anatomic space along the volar ulnar aspect of wrist which contains distal branches of the ulnar nerve. It has since received the eponym guyon canal.

As more studies were conducted on the anatomy of the ulnar tunnel an additional tunnel containing the deep branch of the ulnar nerve was discovered distal to the ulnar tunnel the pisohamate hiatus. Guyon canal is a space at the ulnar medial border of the volar aspect of the wrist. Ulnar nerve compression neuropathy caused by direct compression in guyons canal also known as handlebar palsy seen in cyclists pathoanatomy causes of compression include ganglion cyst 80 of nontraumatic causes lipoma.

Thus guyons canal can be separated into three zones based on which portion of the ulnar nerve are involved. Ulnar tunnel syndrome may be characterized by the location or zone within the guyons canal at which the ulnar nerve is compressed. The roof of the canal is made up of the superficial palmar carpal ligament while the deeper flexor retinaculum and hypothenar muscles comprise the floor.

Anatomy of the hand guyons canal syndrome is a common nerve compression affecting the ulnar nerve as it passes through a tunnel in the wrist called guyons canal. Sometimes both conditions can cause a problem in the same hand.
