Pleura is a greek word that literally means side of the body it was used in medieval latin and eventually took on a new and more specific anatomical meaning in the late middle form of the english language. When the lung collapses however or when air or liquid collects between the two membranes the pleural cavity or sac becomes apparent see pleurisy.

Today it describes the two thin membranes known as the visceral and parietal pleurae that surround the lungs.

Pleura anatomy. The potential space between the two membranes is the pleural cavity it contains a thin layer of fluid which helps in. The visceral pleura is the thin slippery membrane that covers the surface of the lungs and dips into the areas separating the different lobes of the lungs called the hilum. The visceral pleura is attached directly to the lungs as opposed to the parietal pleura which is attached to the opposing thoracic cavity.

The parietal pleura folds back on itself at the root of the lung to become the visceral pleura. Pleural cavity the pleural cavity is the space lined by a serous membrane called the pleural membrane the membrane covers both the lungs and the thoracic wall. Visceral pleura covers the lungs.

The parietal pleura is the outer membrane that lines the inner chest wall.
