Several chronic conditions can lead to low back pain.

Low back pain anatomy. Common causes of low back pain lumbar backache include lumbar strain nerve irritation lumbar radiculopathy bony encroachment and conditions of the bone and joints. Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the space around the spinal cord which can put pressure on the spinal nerves. Muscle injuries of the lower back are commonly caused by an improper lift lifting while twisting or a sudden movement or fall which may cause lower back pain.

A lumbar strain is a stretch injury to the ligaments tendons andor muscles of the low back. Because the lumbar and sacral regions may both be involved in low back pain they are sometimes referred to together as lumbosacral. These sit on top of the sacrum which in turn is above the coccyx tailbone.
